Sleep Tight is an oral device designed to prevent snoring. It has been released in 2014 and gained a lot of popularity since.
As any other snit-snoring mouth piece it is considered a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) as its main function is to reposition you jaw a bit forward to prevent snoring to happen. By doing this, it prevents relaxation of muscles and tissues inside your mouth while you are sleeping. When tissues relax, they collapse and produce vibration sounds, commonly known as snoring. When using this oral device, your muscles and tissues will be tight enough not to collapse and vibrate, so snoring will not be a problem for you anymore.
Sleep Tightalso uses a very common method that most MADs also use, it is called the boil and bite method, which basically consists in softening the material and then biting it so you can mold it at the comfort of your home. This method is actually very simple to get a perfect custom fit, I will explain how to do it correctly later. This is a new product, but the effectiveness of MADs have been proved for more than three decades now. Today, there are almost three different dozen options, each of them with features that make them unique, so you will probably find a wide variety to choose.
Sleep Tight Anatomy
Well, to be honest with you, the manufacturer does not say what materials were used when producing this mouth piece, I searched all over the official website and I found nothing. I think it could be made from something like thermoplastic resin, as it can be heated and shaped, but there is not official information about the material used.
One of the things that I liked about Sleep Tight is that it has a large air hole located just in front of the device. This feature will allow you to breathe through your mouth while you are sleeping, so it is perfect for mouth breathers.
You will also find teeth ridges in the upper and in the lower trays of Sleep Tight, this will allow you to align your teeth correctly while you are in the middle of the fitting process.
Information About the Creator
The mind behind Sleep Tight is Dr. Michael D. Williams, and it seems that he has the necessary credentials and experience in the snoring field. He is actually the man behind the idea and he is also its designer and developer.
There is very little information you can find about him in the official website of the product though, but I was able to get some extra information on other websites and I found out that he is a retired dentist.
He was graduated from the University of Tennessee in the seventies and he has been in the field for more than three decades, practicing cosmetic dentistry until it became his specialization. Cosmetic dentistry includes porcelain veneer, teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures. After more than three decades of work, he retired in 2005.
In 2010 he funded an online retail store which aimed to sell different kinds of anti-snoring mouth pieces, teeth whitening products and night guards. In 2013, he registered the current Sleep Tight official website and submitted and FDA application. It was not until 2014 that the FDA cleared the product stating that it was equivalent to other oral devices on the market which were designed to stop snoring, so it was freshly released in 2014.
Cleared by FDA
As I previously mentioned, if you are looking for a reliable product the FDA label is essential. Not all the companies pay the application to obtain the clearance, and this is actually a very important step regarding safety. It may sound hard to believe, but some companies even try to deceive customers by placing FDA-Cleared labels of products, when in fact, the label refers to the material and not the product itself. So read all labels of every product must be read carefully.
By receiving clearance of FDA, customers know the product they are buying is not dangerous. Most companies avoid all this steps because it usually takes several months to obtain clearance and most of them start all marketing and selling campaigns before submitting their application to the Food and Drug Administration, so by notwaiting a couple of months they sell their product illegally.
Sleep Tight has a FDA cleared label and it has been approved using the 510(k) process, (#K132506). This process allows the manufacturer to provide information about a similar product already cleared by the FDA in order to compare safety and effectiveness of said product to safety and effectiviness of the product to be released.
Lifespan of Sleep Tight
Well, life expectancy of mouth pieces may vary. In the official website you will find that they state that it lifespan is 6 – 24 months. Yes, there is a huge difference from 6 months to two years, but life span really depends on you, and this is something that happens with all mouth pieces. If you take proper care of your Sleep Tight you will probably be using it for almost two years, but if you do not clean it properly or if you tend to grind your teeth the life expectancy of this product is likely to last around 6 – 12 months.
Is This a Good Product to Use If I Have Sleep Apnea?
If you are wondering about Sleep Tight and Slep Apnea, I assume you are receiving treatment from a medical professional. If you are not, then do it and ask him. MADs may treat moderate sleep apnea, but they may not work in all cases, so it is very important you know your condition before trying a new product. If you have sleep apnea and you are already using MADs, you will not have any problems with Sleep Tight because it is pretty much similar to any other mouth pieces with air holes in the front.
This product does mention the treatment of sleep apnea, but personally, if you are not sure if you have this condition, or if you have it but you never used a mouth piece, I think that you should ask a specialist. Self-treatments are very dangerous and sleep apnea is actually a very serious condition.
The company uses a very smart trail period strategy to sell Sleep Tight. If you want to order it, they will only charge you $9.95, they will send you the product and you will be able to try it for full 30 days. If after this trial period you are not happy with the results, you can return the product and that would be all.
On the other hand, if you like it and you want to keep it, your credit card will billed $59.95, which is the full price of Sleep Tight. It is actually an average price among most mouth pieces. You will end up paying around $70 and if you return it before day 31 you will only be charged $9.95.
I always recommend people to try mouth pieces one or two weeks before deciding if it works. I particularly used Sleep Tight 8 nights and I was able to compare its effectiveness to other mouth pieces I have already tried.
As I said before, Sleep Tight uses the boil and bite method which is a very common and simple method used to customized mouth pieces. All you have to do is drop the mouth piece in boiling water, take it off, place it in your mouth, bite and the cool it with cold water.
Although it is very easy to do, timing is of essence, so make sure to have everything you need at reach. You will:
- Two mugs (one for the hot water and one for the cold water)
- A pot (You will have to boil water)
- A spoon or some tongs (It is to remove your mouth piece from the hot water)
- A clock (Just to control time, your cellphone will just do it)
- The mouth piece and a mirror
A will summarize the process below for those who have never done this before:
- Organize all the supplies listed above
- Fill a mug with cold water and reserve
- Heat 3 cups of water in the pot until it boils
- Pour boiling water into the mug and wait two minutes
- Submerge Sleep Tight into the mug with hot water
- Submerge it entirely with help of a spoon
- Wait three minutes and take it out from the hot water with the spoon
- It the walls of the mouth piece are not standing up, straighten its edges with the soon
- Be sure the mouth piece is not to hot and place it in your mouth (V notch up)
- With help of a mirror, center Sleep Tight in your mouth and bite firmly holding your jaw just a bit forward.
- Suck in and use your tongue to shape it against your teeth for about a minute.
- Remove it from your mouth and place it in the mug with cold water for about a minute.
- Place it in your mouth again to check if it is comfortable and take out the plastic spacer.
In case you do not feel the fit is right, you can do the process up to five times. I personally find this method very easy and it tokk me only five minutes. It felt comfortable at the first attempt so I was ready to give it a try.
First Night Using Sleep Tight
I have been using Good Morning Snore Solution for years. It is a very good anti-snoring oral device, you can check my full review on this website as well. I normally switch GMSS with normal mouth pieces in the allergy season. While I am writing this, is allergy season, so I think it is a great time to test Sleep Tight because I cannot possibly breathe using my nose.
When I first placed it inside my mouth it felt very comfortable, there are no bulks or shard edged. Of course, I started to drooled, but users of MADs understand that salivation when trying a new product is totally normal, so it was ok.
I slept like a log. I did not wake up at all and after asking my couple if I had snored the answer was I had not. I woke up feeling very refreshed and energized and virtually no soreness in my jaw, thing that is completely normal when trying new oral devices too. In short, my first night using Sleep Tight was great.
Sleep Tight managed to treat my heavy snoring issues the eight days I tried it. Of course, salivation and soreness gradually diminished. I really liked the large air hole. My allergies were so bad that I really needed to breathe through my mouth with allergies and all snoring disappeared, so it perfectly works.
I was extremely cautious regarding its cleaning. I cleaned it every day immediately after used with an antibacterial liquid soap and with the help of a soft brush. I never use towels or any kind of paper to dry my mouth pieces, I just let it air dry.
I tested a real great quantity of anti-snoring oral devices over a couple of years and I have found most of them really effective to prevent snoring sounds. However, all of them has a special feature or offer you something different and that makes them unique.
To be honest, it is among my first options of ordinary mouth pieces. And I say ordinary because it does not have an adjustment system or a tongue retainer. It does have a pretty large air hole (most “ordinary” mouth pieces come with two small ports) which allowed me to breathe through my mouth without snoring although I was suffering from really heavy allergies.
I also like the feature of the tooth trays that are very useful to locate properly your teeth during the process of fitting. This is something I have not seen before. It was designed by a retired dentist with over 30 years of experience in the field and it is also FDA cleared.
Price is ok and the 30 days trial period is something that not all manufacturers support, so it is also a great feature. You can try it without any risk for a really low price. I think Sleep Tight is a product every snorer should have. Below I will shortly list advantages and disadvantages.
- Developed by an experienced dentist
- Custom fit
- Large air hole
- Long lifespan
- 30 days trial period
- Comfortable and effective
- It may take you time to get used to it, just like to any other MAD.
What should I do?
I say go ahead and try it, get benefit from the 30 day trial period. There is really nothing to lose ad I am sure you are going to love it, especially if you are a mouth breather. Mouth pieces are the most effective products to prevent snoring and there is actually a lot of supply so it is ok to take a time to think wisely which one to buy.
If it is your first time using a mouth piece, Sleep Tight will absolutely help you. If you already tried as many anti-snoring mouth pieces as me and now you are looking for something different, check out my other articles about Good Morning Snore Solution or Zyppah Rx, you will not be disappointed.
